DWI and Prescription Medications
DWI is a serious offense and although most people assume a
DWI is solely an alcohol-related charge, the term Driving While Intoxicated,
can also refer to an individual who operates a motor vehicle while under
the influence of prescription medications or other controlled substances.
Driving while under the influence of prescription drugs can be just as
dangerous as driving while intoxicated or under the influence of narcotics.
That is why individuals who are arrested for DWI because of prescription
drugs, can expect to be charged with a Class B misdemeanor for a
first time DWI, and either a Class A misdemeanor or felony charges for
multiple DWI.
Many prescription drugs come with warning labels telling you not to drive
while you are under the influence of the drug as it may inhibit your senses
and slow your reaction time. Drugs such as Ambien, Soma, Hydrocone, Xanax
and others are all drugs prescribed to either help with sleeping disorders,
anxiety or panic disorders, or to alleviate pain. If you or a loved one
has been arrested for a DWI due to prescription medication you are taking,
you need to consult with a
Houston DWI attorney from my firm at once. I will immediately review the charges against you,
analyze the
field sobriety tests or
breath & blood tests and how they were administered, consult with your physician and other
experts in the field, and advise you on how best to proceed.
I understand how frightening getting pulled over and arrested for a DWI
can be, especially when you haven't been drinking or taking any illegal
drugs. Even a simple arrest can have a negative impact on your job, and
with your friends and family. Thankfully, there are many factors to be
considered when fighting DWI charges, especially those connected to the
use of prescription medication. My staff and I will work diligently to
defend your rights.
