How a DWI Conviction Affects your Insurance
After a DWI arrest, many individuals are concerned about how a DWI conviction will affect their insurance. Some insurance companies will not check your driving record frequently. If they do, it may be because you have opened a new policy. In some cases, it is possible for a drunk driving conviction to escape your insurance company, at least for the time being. If your insurance company does find out about your drunk driving conviction, however, it is very likely that you will have to pay a much higher insurance premium. Speaking with a Houston DWI attorney at your earliest convenience can help you to better understand how to handle your insurance situation. In addition, it will greatly improve your chances of avoiding a conviction in the first place.
Insurance companies will often raise the rates of those found to have been convicted of a DWI. In addition, you will be labeled a high risk driver. Those that are labeled a high risk driver will be required to file proof of insurance with the DMV, often for more than one year. The insurance company will need to provide the DMV with an SR-22 form. An SR-22 form is a form that basically shows the DMV that you are insured. It also stipulates that if for any reason your insurance is cancelled, the DMV is notified immediately. Most states require that an SR-22 is filed with the DMV after a DWI conviction. This means that your insurance company will be aware of the DWI. If your insurance company does not offer an SR-22, your policy will be cancelled or non-renewed.
